KYMEA Energy Center 1

January 2026

Design Systems Builders, LLC is proud to support the Kentucky Municipal Energy Agency with the delivery of Energy Center I, a critical infrastructure project designed to strengthen grid reliability and support Kentucky’s evolving energy needs. Located in Madisonville, Kentucky, the facility is being delivered with DSB playing a key role in the execution of this highly specialized energy facility.

The project includes the erection of a 14,105 square foot pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) that will house the Engine Hall, with steel erection currently underway. Additionally, now in design and engineering, a dedicated Administration Building to support long-term plant operations. Once complete, Energy Center I will operate as a 75 MW natural gas power plant, featuring four Wärtsilä 18V50SG reciprocating internal combustion engines designed for fast-start capability, low emissions, and minimal water consumption.

The facility is being developed to support KYMEA’s members beginning in 2027, providing reliable power and operational flexibility to complement intermittent renewable energy sources. Its modular and scalable design allows the plant to adapt to future demand while maintaining efficiency and a reduced carbon footprint through the use of clean natural gas.

In addition to its long-term operational benefits, the project is delivering meaningful economic impact to the region, generating approximately 100 construction jobs and supporting 15 full-time operational positions upon completion. With first steel set in December 2025, the KYMEA Energy Center I project reflects DSB’s expertise in delivering technically complex, mission-critical facilities that balance performance, reliability, and long-term value for public power providers.
